Residents battling memory loss often revert back to the younger years of their life as their brain is less capable of retaining more recent memories. A common area this can be seen in is with residents being able to vividly recall going to a barber shop or salon to have their hair cut or beard shaved. Executive Leadership at Rockwood noticed that residents experiencing cognitive decline were often nervous and easily agitated when going to the salon. After much brainstorming, they came up with the idea to create a traditional-style barber shop for memory care residents with the thought that the new, but familiar, surrounding would remind them of joyful times in their life and make the experience of going to the barber or salon an enjoyable part of their Rockwood experience. So, they partnered with the Foundation to create Timeless Barber and Beauty in the memory care facility (The Courtyard). Residents have shown to be less anxious and agitated when going in for a haircut, with many greatly enjoying the experience altogether.
