The Rockwood retirement community residents can be heard joking, “It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s a crane,” as they watch the massive construction equipment build an 11-story residential building.
The crane can be seen for miles towering above the South Hill tree line. Rockwood Communities has appropriately named the new building “The Summit” and it will house resort-style apartment units for retirees. The tower’s 11th floor shows plans for five penthouses and a scenic “sky lounge.”
The new amenities are already captivating residents. Rockwood reports 85 percent of the new apartments have been pre-sold, with only 10-12 still available. Construction is scheduled to be complete by the end of Summer 2016.
Walker Construction broke ground on the $60 million project back in March, but only recently brought in the crane. It measures more than 100 feet tall with a horizontal boom that measures approximately 270 feet. Rockwood Communities expects the crane to double in size as the construction continues to move upward.
