Spreading Holiday Cheer

December 18, 2020

We know this year looks a lot different for most of us. However, the holiday spirit doesn’t have to. At Rockwood South Hill we decided to spread some holiday cheer throughout the community in the month of December. Our staff went above and beyond to make sure residents felt like they weren’t missing out on holiday festivities.

On December 2, our Landscaping department kicked off our campus holiday lighting by doing a “parade” with Santa and his reindeer. They decked their “mules” with lights and music, and Santa was perched in the back of a pickup. The “reindeer” landscaping crew went door to door with a special holiday treat for each resident. It took them almost two hours to stop and wish each resident a Merry Christmas! Many Rockwood residents sat in their driveways, bundled up beside a propane heater just waiting for Santa to come by. The campus lights are always a highlight during the season, and bring so much sparkle during our darkest months of the year. The crew was emotionally touched by all the residents who stood on their balconies waving to them, and all the residents who thanked them for the beautiful decorations.

On December 9, we hosted horse-drawn open-air wagon rides through the campus so that residents could see all the amazing lights throughout our 90-acre campus. It was a sold-out event with a max of 6 people per ride, and each ride lasted about 30 minutes. They were able to warm up at the Rockwood Community Center with propane heaters and a special hot chocolate bar.

On December 11, our Food Service team all dressed up in Grinch onesies and delivered handmade cocoa bombs, milk, and snow globe cookies to EVERY resident. We had so many happy people that day! The staff said it was their best workday ever! And judging from all the calls from residents, it was pretty high up on their list of best days too!

We offered residents and their families the opportunity to have a “Big Head” made of themselves or a loved one so they could “be together” over the holidays. One family went gangbusters and mailed our resident, Bob, all 8 of his grandchildren! Bob was so happy but the only person missing was his deceased wife, so he called to order one of her too. Such a touching moment for everyone.  We hope the holiday spirit inspires you this season and brings you happiness.
